Grade 8 Transition to High School

It feels crazy to say, but for our 8th graders, we need to start thinking about leaving almost the instant they begin the year! Katy will be meeting with all 8th grade parents during the last week of September and the first week of October. Sign ups will be available at Parent Night on September 23. 

One detail we need all 8th graders to REALLY focus on right now is attendance and punctuality. While we are very accommodating with our new students, we are going to be much less so with 8th graders. High school admissions to competitive programs are VERY particular about attendance in 8th grade- especially at the VoTech and Aggie schools. I've known very strong, well rounded students to be rejected due to tardies- we don't want this for any of our Accord kids!

For New Families: Adjusting to Accord

Chances are, ANYTHING you are seeing at home right now is normal. 

• Joy over their new school? Normal. 

• Anxiety about specific things? Normal. 

• Being tired? Normal. 

Here is a thing that takes a lot of Accord parents by surprise: Their student starts at school, feels SO MUCH BETTER, and parents breathe a huge sigh of relief. Their child is back! It feels great- until suddenly, it doesn't. Kids are grumpy again, complaining about school- THIS IS NORMAL. It's sort of a honeymoon wearing off thing, and while every kid is different, it often happens around the 3rd week of school. DON'T PANIC! Activate your faith and your patience- and your student will start to settle in for the long haul by the long weekend in September. 

After School Programs: Battling "Reflexive No"

Sometimes we ask our kids too many questions that they give a "reflexive no" to. 

If you KNOW your child would love wrestling, instead of asking and hitting the wall of, "no," try this: "I'm going to share a thought I have with you, but I don't want a response until this time tomorrow- not a yes, not a no, not a maybe. I am thinking you may enjoy wrestling, and I'm considering signing you up. Let's both think about it and we can talk it through this time tomorrow. If you have questions, let me know and we can ask Aidan."

It may not work like magic the very first time- but keep trying. Breaking the reflexive no habit takes many attempts! Stick with it, and we are here to help!

• Wednesday- Debate, then Wrestling (Debate starts in October, so Katy has a filler program if your student needs an activity before Wrestling!)

• Thursday- Accord Media Team (session 1 is for 8th grade at this time)
